DIY Pallet Dog Bed

You too can Make a DIY Pallet Dog Bed!!

DIY Pallet Dog Bed

Good morning on this spring, snowy Mish Mash Monday! I’m wondering where my warm Spring days went already :/

It’s a perfect day to share with you our DIY Pallet Dog Bed! A few months ago I mentioned to the OM that I wanted to make a bed for our bull mastiff, Maximus, aka Meathead. I wanted it to have a farm deco feel to it..to match our theme as we Remodel our Farmhouse.

Soooooo….the OM decided, in the middle of remodeling my new office I might add lol, to make that dog bed. I think he really just needed a break from working on the office but I won’t complain 😉 Once we make a few more tweeks, I’ll be sure to give you a tour.

Rip a Pallet

To get things started the OM “ripped” a pallet with a Sawzall. It truly is amazing that businesses trash these wonderful free lumber sources; but, like they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

I absolutely love that at least 10 of them make there way to our house on a regular basis. So far the OM has surprised me with a desk and a makeup vanity and I can tell you the pallet project list is not empty.

I’ve included a diagram of a pallet to help with description of the parts.

The Breakdown of a Pallet. This shows each part of a pallet and what they are called.

A Solid Base

Once the pallet was dismantled, the OM cut 4 of the runners to make the frame of the base. The length and width of the base is going to depend on how large you want your bed to be. We have an large breed dog, so of course the bed is rather large to allow for Maximus to stretch out. Can you say spoiled? lol 😉

Once the frame was nailed together (the OM used a nailgun on this project), a piece of plywood was cut to the dimensions of the frame and nailed on top.

Four Sides

Next the side frames were made from runner boards and plywood was again nailed to these frames. You will need to make sure to build the frame so that there is an “entryway” into the bed. We chose to leave a section out of the front so Maximus can easily get in and out himself; but I have also seen some placing a door in the front.

Adding Country Flair

As we are remodeling the farmhouse, I requested for a country touch to the bed. To make it look “barnish”

Deck boards were cut and nailed to the plywood on 3 of the sides to achieve this look.

A Few Finishing Touches

A peek at he unfinished Pallet Dog Bed. Someone couldn’t wait to test run it lol 🙂

Some finishing touches still need to be made before we called it finished. It needed to be stained and lockable wheels put on the bottom of the base.

Staining and wheels are a personal preference.

You can choose to stop here with the “raw” natural look or paint/stain it to match your home’s décor. I chose the later and stained it to match the rest of the wood in my new office. I used Minwax Wood Finish in Golden Pecan.

The OM attached 4 lockable wheels to the bottom of the base for me so that I can move it on my own. This Pallet Dog Bed is quite heavy since it’s for a large dog and of course I don’t want it to scratch the hardwood floors we worked so hard on restoring.

The finished product. All stained and the wheels attached.

I sewed a comfy cushion inside of the dog bed. Which could be used as a dog bed alone and I have taken it out and used it for when Maximus isn’t feeling well and wants to lay next to Mummy”s side of the bed.

As you can see I had to put all of his blankies in too.

On Whip it Up Wednesday this week, I will share with you how to “whip” up one of these comfy dog cushions.

So what do you think?

Are you thinking of making one of these Pallet Dog Beds?
