Easy Ham Salad

This easy ham salad is so easy it only has four ingredients and is ready in minutes.

It’s been a really HOT summer around here and I refuse to turn the stove on to make lunch. On top of that, it is CANNING SEASON and the kitchen is already a hot mess! Is that wrong?? I don’t think so either lol.

This easy ham salad is my go-to when I need to whip something up quick. And of course the guys in this house love when there’s a bowl of it in the fridge and they want something fast to take to work.

Why not just buy it at the deli in my local store?

I have to be honest here, I used to buy it at my local grocery; but, after a friend of mine gave me the rundown of how that store made it, I never wanted to eat it again.

Did you know some delis make up this sandwich spread with whatever odds and ends of deli meat they have laying around at the end of the day and just throw it in together? That bothered me to not know exactly what meats are in there.

Cut to the gist already, will ya? How do you make this ham salad?

I buy a 5 lb block of cooked ham for my ham salad, cut it in half and freeze the half I’m not using. Chop it up in the food processor. I add in a small onion so it gets chopped in the processor as well.

Transfer the chopped ham and onions to a medium sized bowl. Spoon in to the ham mix one cup of sweet pickle relish. Then plop in half a jar of regular mayo and stir it all together. Viola, it’s ready to go.

My relish and mayo are always chilled in the fridge, so there’s no need for me to chill this ham salad before we eat it. If you use relish or mayo straight from the cupboard, you may want to pop a lid on the bowl and put it in the refrigerator for a few to chill it. Ham salad tastes best when cold.

Does it go on a bun? Bread? How do I eat it?

I prefer it on a sandwich bun; but, it’s all about your personal preference.

It can be served on a bun, bread, a pita, eaten straight off the spoon. I have a friend that wraps some in a leaf of lettuce.

Speaking of lettuce….can I put veggies on my sandwich?

Heck ya, you can! Load it up with whatever you like on a sandwich. Add lettuce, tomatoes, peppers…the possibilities are endless here. That’s why the line is always so long at those foot-long sub shops lol…everyone has their own veggie preference.

What to do with leftover Ham Salad?

Any unused ham salad should be kept refrigerated in an air tight container. It contains meat and mayo which can become spoiled if left out to get warm.

Ham salad can be stored for up to four days if kept cold. It’s all about the life of the meat here. At our house, it is usually all eaten before the fourth day hits anyhow lol.

Pin for later 🙂
